On the other hand, the term forage includes all the plants material that are eaten by the herbivores animals which are the grass eating animals.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importance of healthy diet for animals\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A balanced diet will keep an animal healthy, happy and productive. Just like humans need a nutritious diet to stay healthy, fit and happy, animals too require a good healthy diet if they are expected to give you products like eggs, meat, milk etc.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of cultivating Fodder crops?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><p><b>Cultivation of fodder <a href=\"https:\/\/agrierp.com\/blog\/integrated-crop-management\/\">crops<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the Dairy farm area is essential for a successful business and is also considered economical.\u00a0 Feeding farm animals on concentrated feeds requires a lot of investment and is not economical at all.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Best Fodder crops examples:<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different <\/span><b>fodder crop examples \/ <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">varieties suitable for dairy cattle and are categorized into 5 different types such as\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legume fodder<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cereal fodder<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grass fodder<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tree fodder\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azolla.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cereal fodder varieties (grass)<\/span><\/h3><p><b>Maize fodder<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Require well drained and fertile conditions.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is grown mostly in the months of June-July (kharif crops), but in South India maize fodder is grown as Rabi crop.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average yield of maize fodder per hectare is 40-50 tonnes which is more than enough to feed it to a lot of animals.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Sorghum fodder<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This grass is mainly cultivated for grains and fodder.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drought resistant.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varieties suitable for Jan-Feb and April-May under\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sorghum grass grows very well within a temperature range of 25-35\u02daC.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of grass does not grow in a sandy soil. Other than that it can grow at any type of soil.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Co-4 grass<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is cultivated from the cross of Napier grass and Bajra cereal.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produces high yield variety of grass; produces around 150 tons per year from one acre of land.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grass fodder varieties<\/span><\/h3><p><b>Hybrid Napier<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type has more leaves.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protein content of this type is from 8 to 11%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One type of this variety i.e; KKM-1 cumbu Napier is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crop when cultivated for the first time is harvested during the 75-80 days of sowing and the subsequent harvests are done within a 45 days interval after the first harvest.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Guinea grass<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a short creeping rhizome.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protein content is 4 to 14%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some varieties of this grass are hamil, makuni, rivers-dale.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grows in regions with any type of soil with good draining properties.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average yield of this crop is 175 tonnes per hectare in around 8 cuts.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Para grass<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is cultivated in humid areas or in arid\/ semi arid regions.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of\u00a0 crop is sensitive to winter weather conditions therefore one needs to be careful while cultivating them.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It produces around 80 to 100 tonnes per hectare.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Blue Buffalo grass<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of grass grows really well in dry lands under rain-fed conditions.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two varieties of this grass :<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cenchrus cilliaris\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. setigerus.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crop needs well drained soil that should be rich in calcium content.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree fodder varieties<\/span><\/h3><p><b>Subabul<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first harvest is done when the tree attains a trunk diameter of about 3 cm or when the tree has completed one seed production cycle.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fodder production is around 80-100 tonnes per hectare.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Gliricidia<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This crop has the ability to tolerate a wide range of climatic conditions .<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crop should have proper drainage facilities.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These trees are grown mostly as ornamental trees or are used as shade trees.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Sesbania<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protein content of Sesbania leaves is about 25%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can be grown throughout the year using proper irrigation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any type of soil is considered suitable for this tree type<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These should have good drainage facilities.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One hectare can produce an average of 100 tonnes per hectare\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.Legume fodder varieties<\/span><\/h3><p><b>Cow pea or lobia<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This plant is grown in tropical or subtropical and warm temperate regions.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fodder variety can be cultivated in any season.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can produce 18-20 tonnes per hectare fodder.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protein content is 20%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This variety is suitable for open grazing.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Desmanthus<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is grown throughout the year as an irrigated crop, but is specifically grown well during June-October.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Lucerne<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also called as Alfalfa and is considered to be a very rich leguminous crop with protein content of around 15-20%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This grass adds nitrogen to the soil and helps in\u00a0 improving the fertility of the land..<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This variety of fodder is not suitable for open grazing, but is highly digestible , is a very healthy feed option for farm animals and helps in better yield of milk.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Stylo<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a plant which can be grown in tropical regions but can be growin in regions with poor drainage conditions as well.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protein content is 15 to 18%.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideal season for cultivation of stylo is from June-July to September- October.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fodder crops examples for specific farm animals:\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Fodder Crops for Chickens<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chickens can be fed on any grains like: barley, wheat, oats, sorghum, corn, quinoa, amaranth, and millet. All these are fine for growing chicken fodder.
