As harvest nears, the questions start rolling in: How will the soybeans hold up? What’s the yield potential? Farmers want certainty, but just like corn, the story of this year’s soybean crop will be shaped as much by harvestability as by what’s in the pods.
I’m reminded of a grower years ago who quoted me back from an article, pulling a folded clipping from his shirt pocket. He wanted to know why his “record-breaking” beans didn’t match the number I had been quoted as saying was “possible.” It was a lesson I haven’t forgotten: there’s potential, and then there’s what the field actually delivers.
This season, soybeans have endured a series of challenges: wide swings in planting dates, early-season flooding in some counties, and late-summer drought stress in others. Add in pest and disease pressure, and the math on yield potential gets complicated.
Soybean diseases ramped up quickly once August arrived. According to Purdue’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab, sudden death syndrome, frogeye leaf spot, and brown stem rot all showed up in samples through midseason. In the last two weeks, white mold cases have also been confirmed, especially in northern Indiana fields that stayed wetter longer.
One late-August sample even showed multiple issues in a single field: frogeye, Cercospora leaf blight, and charcoal rot on the roots. That sort of combination can accelerate premature leaf drop, robbing the crop of photosynthesis just when pods need it most.
Pod integrity is the latest concern. Early shattering has been reported in fields that were stressed during grain fill and then hit with sudden dry weather. While not yet widespread, it’s enough to remind us that soybean yield isn’t “in the bag” until the crop is binned.
Unlike corn, soybeans don’t lend themselves to pinch or push tests. But that doesn’t mean scouting isn’t crucial. Pod checks can give an early warning of harvestability.
If you see pods beginning to crack at the seams, or if gentle handling in the field causes seeds to pop free, you may need to move up harvest plans.
Similarly, lodging risk should be evaluated. In fields with higher disease incidence or late storms, weak stems can topple plants before the combine ever enters. Lodging doesn’t just reduce yield; it slows harvest efficiency and increases losses at the cutter bar.

Here are a few timely reminders:
Prices and inputs will also weigh heavily in the 2025 soybean story. High fertilizer and chemical costs mean this year’s crop comes with more financial risk than usual. Harvest losses, even a few bushels per acre, can quickly eat into profit margins. On the flip side, markets remain volatile, and timely delivery may make a difference in cash flow.
Elevator delays, too, will be part of the puzzle. Long lines can force growers to make tough calls about whether to cut a less-stable field early and dry it later, or risk waiting.
By August, the most common question was simple: What are soybean yields going to be? Unfortunately, the answer isn’t a tidy bushels-per-acre figure. This year, it may come down to harvest strategy as much as agronomic potential.

Soybean fields that look strong on paper could still lose bushels if pods shatter or stems lodge. Conversely, fields that struggled early might surprise if they’re harvested clean and timely.
At AgriERP, we know harvest isn’t just about what’s in the field; it’s also about timing, logistics, and decision-making. Digital tools that track field conditions, forecast disease risks, and help schedule harvest operations can make the difference between average returns and capturing full potential. As this season proves, staying proactive is every bit as important as planting and protecting the crop.
